Obituary for Carl Oakes
Carl P. “Cokie” Oakes, 85, of Indiana, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the Communities at Indiana Haven Nursing Home.
He was born November 22, 1927 in Clymer, Pennsylvania, a son of the late William Earl and Susanna Oakes.
Carl grew up in Clymer, PA. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1945 and served aboard the USS Carpelloti until his discharge in October of 1948. He attended Indiana State Teachers College under the GI Bill. After graduating in 1952 with a degree in Physics and Mathematics Education, he served in the US Army as a 2nd Lieutenant until August 1953.
Carl married his soul mate, Doris Woffenden, also of Clymer on January 6, 1950. They eventually settled in Indiana, PA where they raised their three children.
Prior to his retirement in January of 1986 as a Professor Emeritus from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Carol spent many years supervising student teachers from the mathematics department at IUP throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Carl was an avid golfer, especially enjoying playing with the “early morning guys” at the VFW course. He and Doris also spent many hours playing bridge with their special friends, Bill and Thelma.
Carl is survived by his daughters Bridget Nagurney and husband John, of Greensburg, PA; Margaret “Peggy” Happel and husband Tom, of South Paris, Maine; his son William “Bill” Oakes and wife Tamara of Oak Harbor, Washington; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; his siblings: Betty Schelfe and husband Clyde, Phyllis Clement, and Robert Oakes and wife Eleanor.
Carl lost his beloved wife Doris eight weeks ago. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by brothers William, J. Ward, and Edward Oakes; his sister, Mary Jane Roschen and his brother-in-law Leroy “Red” Woffenden.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family. The Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana is handling the private arrangements.
His children would like to thank the staff of the communities at Indian Haven and VNA/Family Hospice of Indiana for the excellent care and attention they provided our father. A special thanks is given to Bonnie, his personal caregiver.
