Obituary for Edward John Onuscheck

Edward John Onuscheck, 90, of Indiana died Tuesday, June 14, 2016 at St. Andrews Village in Indiana. Born in Royal, PA, September 9, 1925, he was the son of the late, Mike Onuscheck and Mary (Kontier) Onuscheck. He was the husband to Irene (Hegedus) Onuscheck of Indiana, whom he married December 18, 1947. They were married 68 years.

Ed was a midshipman in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

He attended classes at West Virginia University, he later graduated from the Pittsburgh Technical Institute in 1955 and furthered his education at IUP where he earned his Masters Degree in 1975.

Ed worked for the Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Company where he was responsible for all state and federal safety laws. He became the vice president of Safety at R & P, where during the 1980’s they became the largest coal company in Pennsylvania. Ed worked with the Bituminous Coal Operators Association (BCOA) in Washington, DC where he was a member of their Safety Committee for 25 years. Ed was also a member of the American Mining Congress Safety Committee from 1972 to 1990, and was Chairman of the PA Coal Association Safety Committee for 25 years.

He was a past president of the following mine safety organizations: National Mine Rescue Association; Mine Rescue Veterans; National Safety Council and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association. Ed also held memberships in the Mine Inspectors Institute of America and the BCOA-UMWA Joint Industry Health & Safety Committee.

Ed received the coal industry’s highest safety award in 1982, The Donald S. Kingery Memorial Award.
He was a longtime member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church in Indiana where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Father McNelis Council 1481.

He also belonged to the Indiana Country Club, the Elks Club and the Allied Club of Indiana.

In addition to his wife, Ed is survived by his two sons: William Onuscheck and wife, Diana of Indiana and David Onuscheck and wife, Laura of Apex, NC. Other surviving family members include his grandchildren: Laura Fallon (Matt), Bealeton, VA; Brian Onuscheck (Barb), Ashburn, VA; David Onuscheck, Jr., Nashville, TN; Doug Onuscheck, Norfolk, VA; Nicholas Onuscheck (Justina), Indiana and great grandchildren , Skyler Onuscheck, New Mexico and Lourdy and Lourdinia Fallon, and Benjamin Tanner, all of Virginia.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Onuscheck and Catherine Skoda

Friends will be received Thursday evening June 16th from 6 – 8 PM at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana. Visitation will also be held Friday morning from 9 – 10 AM in the Narthex of St. Bernard of Clairvaux church. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 AM in the sanctuary. Entombment will be made with military honors in the St. Bernard Cemetery Mausoleum.
