Obituary for Howard David Abbey

Howard David  Abbey
Howard David Abbey, 88, of Chambersville, passed away Saturday September 3, 2016, at the St. Andrew’s Village, Indiana. Born in Indiana, PA on August 4, 1928, he was a son of the late Paul Revere Abbey and Mildred (Postlewaite) Abbey.

He attended IUP, served in the marines during peacetime and then spent his young adulthood traveling and working throughout the United States. He enjoyed reading and writing poetry. He married and settled back in Indiana County. Howard was self-employed in his own tree services business. In retirement, he enjoyed being outdoors, “tinkering” in the garage, watching classic TV shows and movies, and swimming at the YMCA.

Howard was preceded in death by his brothers John Abbey, Edward Abbey, and William Abbey. He was recently preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Iva (Rhoades) Abbey whom he married, September 1, 1956. He is survived by their children: Kathleen Abbey-Baker, Creekside; Michael Abbey, Altoona; and Joseph Abbey and his wife, Laura, Home, PA. He is survived by one sister, Nancy Abbey, Santa Cruz, CA. He is also survived by the following grandchildren and their spouses: Eric Forsythe & wife, Beth; Heather LaVan & husband, Nate; Matthew Baker; Mitch Baker & partner, Ryan; Amanda Leighty; JoAnn Abbey; and Joseph Abbey, Jr. Howard’s surviving great grandchildren are: Sophia Forsythe; Elise Baker; Isaiah LaVan; and Autumn & Owen Forsythe.

Also surviving are his former son-in-law, Randy Forsythe and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his wife, parents and siblings, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Gene Baker.

A private family burial will take place at a time to yet be determined.
