Obituary for Leonard Zagurskie

Leonard Zagurskie, 87, of Springdale, died Friday, October 28, 2016 at the Veterans Hospital in Pittsburgh. Leonard was the son of Frank Zagurskie and Sofia Woroschuk Zagurskie. He was born on July 27, 1929 and grew up ‘on the farm’ in Clune, Young Township, Pennsylvania.

He attended Elder’s Ridge High School in Elder’s Ridge, Pennsylvania before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He was a distinguished veteran that served admirably in the Korean Conflict. He worked for the B & O and C & O railroads as a telegrapher/dispatcher.

In retirement, with his green thumb, he enjoyed gardening and frequent visits from family and friends. A true entrepreneur and a self-taught successful electrician who never confronted an electrical appliance he could not repair. A meticulous, self-taught mechanic; a man of many trades and abilities. He was a devoted husband and father and a friend to all he would meet. He was the patriarch of the family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean Olive (Strong) Zagurskie, with whom he shared his life for 58 years and mourned her loss since her passing on March 15, 2011.

Leonard and Jean were the proud parents of four children and Leonard is survived by all his children and their spouses: Leonard Jr. and his wife, Regina, of Lebanon, Pa.; Margaret Goldie Fortuna and her husband, James, of Vandergrift; Charles L. and his wife, Sherri, of Butler; and Donald K. and his wife, Donis, of Mifflintown, Pa. He is, also, survived by all of his children’s children; numerous nieces, nephews; to great-great-great-great nieces and nephews; together with all of his friends and family–he enjoyed their camaraderie, friendship and fellowship, especially when it involved a good polka.

He was, also preceded in death by his parents; five brothers: Nikola Zagurskie; Steve Zagurskie; Andrew John Zagurskie; Charles Zagurskie; Theodore Franklin Zagurskie; seven sisters: Eva Yacenich; Anna Oeser; Marie Irvine; Stella Zagurskie; Dorothy Zagurskie; Sofia “Zonia” Zagurskie; Louise E. Messina Beatty; three sisters-in-law: Mrs. Steve (Sarah Louise Oswald) Zagurskie; Mrs. Andrew (Anna Komola) Zagurskie; Mrs. Theodore Franklin (Rose Ann Riggle) Zagurskie; five brothers-in-law: Jack Yacenich; Paul Oeser; Wilson Earl Irvine; Jack Messina; and William Beatty. So many family and friends, he dearly missed for so long but he kept alive by his memories he shared with all whom would listen through his years.

Friends will be received Monday afternoon from 1:00 until 2:00PM at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana, where his funeral service will begin at two o’clock following the visitation hour. Rev. Father George Hnatko will officiate. Burial will be in the Cherryhill Progressive Cemetery.
