Obituary for Bernadette Marie Smiley (Sunderland)

Bernadette Marie Smiley (Sunderland)
Bernadette Marie (Sunderland) Smiley, 69, of Indiana, died Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at the Indiana Regional Medical Center. Born in Spangler, April 1, 1948, she was a daughter of the late William Robert Sunderland and Catherine (Kulic) Sunderland. She married Metro Smiley, June 28, 1969. For 48 years together they raised four children and were grandparents to five grandchildren.

Bernadette was a graduate of Purchase Line High School. She and her husband, Metro, were the co-owners and operators of the former Smiley’s Furniture Gallery in Indiana. She worked in furniture sales for much of her adult life, retiring as a sales associate with the former Furniture World store in Indiana.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who adored her family and loved caring for them. Bernadette was a devout Catholic and was a woman of strong faith. She was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church.

Bernadette enjoyed listening and dancing to Polka music. Both she and Metro would often travel throughout western Pennsylvania and parts of Ohio to attend polka dances and festivals. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Indiana American Post # 141.

In addition to her husband, Metro, Bernadette is survived by her children: Stephen A. Smiley (Lisa), Clymer; Kristeen C. Kratz (Timothy) Souderton, PA; Melissa M. Pigna (Orlando), Hanover, PA; and Jonathan A. Smiley (fiancée, Lisa Kass), Greensburg. Her grandchildren are: Jeremy (Laurie), Joshua, and Jerad Peles, and Vincent and Michael Pigna. Her two siblings are: Adele Hughes (Kenneth) and Andrew Sunderland, both of Glen Campbell.

Friends will be received Friday from 4 until 8 PM at the Rairigh- Bence Funeral Home, of Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday morning at 11 AM at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church, Indiana. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
