Larry A. Judge
Larry A. Judge, 75, of Indiana, passed away suddenly Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at the Indiana Regional Medical Center.

Born in Pittsburgh April 25, 1942, the son of the late Ralph and Eileen (Dodd) Judge, he was married to the former Elaine Reschini for nearly 50 years, from 1968, and was the father of Lisa Marie Judge.

Residing with his family in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh and in Pitcairn in his preschool years until the family, including his sister Larraine, moved to Circleville, near Irwin, in 1947, Judge graduated from Norwin High School in 1960.

While at Norwin, Judge was sports editor of the school newspaper, known as the “Sports Judge”, and was part of the Irwin Times-Observer staff, covering borough council, township commissioner, borough council and school board meetings and writing sports.

Scorekeeper, statistician and reporter of Norwin baseball until the team won the 1960 WPIAL championship, Judge was inducted (along with the complete team) to the Norwin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.

Before graduating from what was the Indiana State College in 1964, Judge had been sports editor of the campus newspaper, the Penn, and served as the college’s sports information director, each for two years.

His first fulltime work came as an English teacher at Lorain (Ohio) High School and at Penn Joint Junior High (now part of the Penn-Trafford district). He completed graduate credits at Pennsylvania State University and The University of Pittsburgh.

In 1966 Judge began work at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania as assistant director of public relations and sports information director.

Three years later, in 1969, he moved to Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, as director of public information, including sports information and later adding college publications and public relations.

Judge worked in 1971-72 as director of evening and extension operations at Mercer County Community College in Trenton, New Jersey.

He returned to IUP in 1972 as the university’s first fulltime director of alumni affairs, serving in this capacity until 1979, when he became its first fulltime sports information director, until 1996, when he became coordinator of special projects for athletics, including the IUP Athletic Hall of Fame, and associate sports information director.

He retired in 2002 but continued his service to IUP as a member of its Athletic Hall of Fame board of directors and as part of its football-team corps of academic mentors. He received the Hall of Fame’s Honorary award.

An active member of Grace United Methodist Church since 1997, Judge served as coordinator of its Welcome Center and visitation to hospitalized and homebound members, a member of the church marketing team, and as an usher and greeter.

He had previously been a member of Graystone United Presbyterian Church, serving on committees and as an usher there, and of Circleville Methodist and Presbyterian churches in New Castle and in Princeton, New Jersey.

Co-Coordinator of the Indiana County John Kerry Presidential campaign in 2004, Judge was a phone bank volunteer for the Barack Obama presidential campaigns in 2008 and 2012 as well as for several other candidate campaigns for various offices.

He was also associated with the Indiana Borough Bicentennial celebration committee, the Westmoreland Athletic Club and with the Indiana Mayor’s Coffee Club.

In past years in Indiana, he was a member of the Lions Club, Rotary and Toastmasters. A brother of Phi Sigma Kappa social fraternity, he was a district governor and chapter alumni club president.

Judge is survived by his wife, Elaine, and his daughter, Lisa, of Rocky River, Ohio, and his sister, Larraine Hepner, of Allison Park. He was preceded in death by his parents.
