Obituary for Nancy Jo Mattis (Poliyak)

Nancy Jo Mattis, 71 of Indiana, formerly of Gipsy and Natrona Heights, died Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Butler Memorial Hospital. Born October 14, 1946 in Punxsutawney, she was a daughter of the late George Poliyak and Yvonne (McKee) Poliyak Deyarmin. She was the widow of John (“Buck”) Mattis, who died December 23, 1995.

In addition to being a homemaker, Nancy was employed over 40 years as a certified nursing assistant. She worked at the Ebensburg Center, Pavalko’s Personal Care Home in Cherry Tree and the Highland Center in Brackenridge. Nancy enjoyed working with the elderly and had many fond memories of those she cared for and their families.

She was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. She enjoyed watching every game and conducted her own post game analysis with her family. Nancy loved tending to her flower garden and had a green thumb with hanging baskets.

Nancy was most proud of her seven grandchildren. She loved her grandchildren with all her heart and enjoyed every minute she spent with them.

She is survived by her children: George Mattis, Arvada, CO; Todd Houser (Kelly), Cherry Tree; Kip Mattis (Ruth), Clymer; and Angela Bernardo (Tim), Butler. Her seven grandchildren: Marcy Mattis, Julie Mattis, George Mattis, Lexie Houser, Brady Houser, Kip Mattis and Grant Bernardo. Nancy is survived by siblings: Larry Poliyak, Rossiter; Kathy Boring and Robin Rummel, Cherry Tree, and Bryan Deyarmin, New Kensington. She is also survived by her Aunt Jane Niel of Glen Campbell and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Nancy was preceded in death by her brother, Martin Poliyak.

At Nancy’s request, there will be no visitation. A private burial will take place at Frye Cemetery at the convenience of her family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in her honor to a charity of their choice.

The Mattis Family is being assisted by the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana.
