Obituary for John Zbur

John Zbur,86, of Indiana, died at his home surrounded by his family, Saturday, June 3, 2017. Born in Ernest, May 27, 1931, he was a son of the late Nicklas Zbur and Teresa (Skumanich) Zbur. He married Jean Ann (Marshall) Zbur June 12, 1953. Next week they would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary.

John was a 1949 graduate of Indiana High School. He later served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He then graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in Hershey where he received training to become a patrolman with the Indiana Borough Police Department. He achieved the rank of Sergeant and was well known in the Indiana Community. In the early 1960’s he left the police department and took a job with the U.S. Postal Service where he worked at the Indiana Post Office. John retired from that position in 1992 following more than thirty years of service as a postal worker.

He was a lifelong member of St. Jude Thaddeus Byzantine Catholic Church in Ernest and was a current member of St. Anne Byzantine Catholic Church in Clymer. Since 1968, John has been a 4th Degree Knight of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Fr. McNelis Council 1481of Indiana. He was also a member of the Greek Catholic Union.

John was a 50 plus year member of the American Legion and belonged to the Disabled American Veterans.

He loved spending time with his family and taking family vacations. His family fondly remembers their many trips to the beach as well as traveling to Canada and Wyoming. He enjoyed the outdoors and going fishing and hunting. He liked to garden, play cards, throw horseshoes and work crossword puzzles. He also liked to bowl and was a member of the Catholic Men’s Bowling League. More recently he simply liked to watch baseball and hockey games and old westerns.

In addition to his wife, Jean, John is survived by his daughter, Joli Zbur, Clymer; granddaughter, Amanda Core & husband, Steve, West Mifflin; grandson, Nathan Harrison & wife, Caroline, Bayonne, NJ; great grandchildren, Chase and Connor Harrison; step-great grandchildren, Jeremy and Justin Core; sister, Mary Ann Chiodo & husband, Frank, Lackawanna, NY and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and the following siblings: Mike, George, Nick, Alex and Charles Zbur.

Friends will be received Tuesday, June 6th from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 PM at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Clymer. The knights of Columbus will offer a Rosary Service in the afternoon and a Panachida service will be held at 7 PM. A funeral service will begin Wednesday morning at eleven o’clock at St. Anne Byzantine Catholic Church, Clymer. Rev. William A. Lascelles will preside. Burial will be at the Oakland Cemetery, Indiana.
