Obituary for Edward L. Lucas Sr.

Edward John Lucas, Sr., 83 of Indiana, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Monday, July 31, 2017. Born, August 29, 1933 in Coalport, he was a son of the late, Nicholas Lucas and Anna (Percic) Lucas.

Ed joined the U.S. Army while in high school and served stateside during the Korean War. In 1969 he became a heavy equipment operator for PP&L, working at the former Greenwich Collieries, a job he held for nearly 23 years until the mine closed.

In retirement, Ed loved to fish and make friends with other fishermen. He also loved passing on his joy and knowledge of fishing to kids. So much so, that for over 15 years he has been instrumental in organizing the Edward J. Lucas Fishing Derby in Clymer. Ed’s family wishes to thank all of the businesses, organizations and people who worked with their father to make the fishing derby the success that it is today. The event has brought joy and happiness to numerous children and volunteers in the area.

In addition to fishing, it’s not hard to imagine that he also enjoyed boating.

Ed was an avid card player who treasured the many friendships he had with his fellow card players. He always liked hearing a good joke, and was pretty good at telling jokes too. Most importantly, Ed loved his family and had a special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of the Purchase Line Church of the Brethren where he had been baptized and re-dedicated his life to the Lord.

Ed is survived by his two children: Brenda Nichol (Larry), Glen Campbell and Edward J. Lucas, Jr. (Tammy), Indiana. He will also be missed by the following grandchildren and great grandchildren: Khristopher Nichol (Jeanine); Brandon Nichol; Laura Spidell (Chad); and Paige, John Michael and McKenzie Lucas. Great Grandchildren: Zachary, Allison & Owen Nichol and Malia Spidell. Ed also has two surviving siblings: Mildred Pikel and Irene Patterson.

In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine L. (Gunter) “Tootie” Lucas, and five siblings: Paul “Bud” Lucas, Carl Lucas, Velma Furcho, Mary Ann Gunter and an infant brother, Franklin Lucas.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in Clymer, across from the little league field in the area of the fishing derby. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to any branch of the Marion Center Bank for the Ed Lucas Fishing Derby.
