Obituary for Anna Jane Hicks (Baker)

Anna Jane (Baker) Hicks, 86, died quietly in her sleep on Monday, January 29, in Hollywood, Florida. She was born in Green Township, Indiana County on September 17, 1931 to the late Enos Clyde Baker and Anna Pearl (Dilling) Baker.

She attended Juniata College and IUP, where she received a degree in elementary education.

Jane taught elementary school for many years in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida. One of her greatest joys in life was helping young children off to a good start in school.

Jane was an avid quilter and an excellent seamstress. She also enjoyed traveling and had visited most of the U.S. as well as England and Ireland.

She was a member of Frostproof United Methodist Church, she sang in the choir as well.

Jane will be sadly missed by her three children: Susan Jane (Hicks) Ritter (husband, Pat), Fort Lauderdale, FL; Karen Kay (Hicks) Stepp (husband, Sherwood), Williamsport, OH; and James Lawrence Hicks (wife, Danita) of York. Her grandchildren: Sherwood “BJ” Stepp Jr., Williamsport, OH; Christina Eckert, Akron, OH; Alicia (Stepp) Higgins, Youngstown, OH; Melissa Stepp, Akron, OH; Jamie Hicks, York, PA; Jenna Hicks, Herndon, VA and one great grandson, Cameron James Stepp, Akron, OH. Jane is also survived by the following siblings: Shirley Yvonne (Baker) Stitt, Barr Slope; Edward Baker, Hillsdale; George Baker, Clearfield; John Baker, Purchase Line; and Randy Baker, Danville.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Laird Wendal “Pete” Hicks, her son Leonard Wendal and her grandson Patrick Ritter.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Friday, February 2nd at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana. A funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at one o’clock at the funeral home with Reverend Kirt W. Anderson officiating. Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery, Indiana.
