Obituary for Stanley Delmont Spence

Stanley Delmont Spence
Stanley Delmont Spence, 87, of Indiana stepped from his earthly home to his heavenly home on Friday, March 16, 2018. He was the widower of Margaret (Muller) Spence. Born August 24, 1930 in Indiana, PA, he was the son of Elder D. and Thelma (Peace) Spence Byers. Stan called Indiana his hometown nearly all of his life. It was where he and his wife of 63 years, Marg, built their home and raised their family.

Stan had a variety of jobs. He served in the Navy. He and his brothers had a plastering business,
plastering many Indiana area homes and businesses. He also worked for PennDOT and as a deputy
game warden for PA. The majority of his working years were spent as a construction inspector
supervisor for the Department of Environmental Resources, retiring in 1990. Also, he was a member of Graystone Presbyterian Church; a past member of Freemasons Lodge 313 and Coudersport Consistory and the Indiana County Bow and Gun Club.

Stan was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, and fishing both locally and at his camp in Potter County, where he was a charter member. He tied fishing flies and made archery arrows from his archery shop in his home. He was an excellent archer, having harvested deer for 50 consecutive archery seasons.

Stan was also a life-long athlete. Football, baseball, and pitching horseshoes were a few of his favorites. He was very proud to be a member of the IHS 1947 undefeated/untied football team. He also traveled the country to compete and placed in several World Horseshoe Pitching Tournaments.

Stan enjoyed traveling with his wife after he retired on several trips across the country, to Canada and Japan; camping in Gettysburg; and spending countless days at their camp in Potter County. He also enjoyed playing his guitar and singing. Whether it was at home, at his hunting camp, or more recently, at the Senior Center, nursing homes or his church, he kept true to his love of classic country music.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; and his brothers, James and David.

Stan is survived by his children: Mary Louise Giles (Paul), Ruskin, FL; William Spence (Sandra Smith), Plum Borough; Kathleen Kimmel (Glenn), Shelocta; Sandra Morris (John), Indiana; Beverly McGinnis (Brook), Indiana. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; and in-laws: Ann Spence; Barb McKee; Jim & Joanne Muller; Jim Buckshaw; Joe Muller; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received Friday, March 23, 2018 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana. His Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 10:30am at Graystone Presbyterian Church, Rev. Rick Hurley officiating. Interment will be in St. Bernard Cemetery, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers, Stan’s children request memorial donations be made to AseraCare Hospice, 100 CTC Dr. #110, Johnstown, PA 15904, who took such wonderful care of both of their parents.
