Obituary for Harry "Jerry" Holt

Harry "Jerry" Holt
Harry Gerald Holt, “Jerry” went to be with his Lord on April 17, 2018. He bravely fought the effects of Parkinson’s disease for several years. He was born May 20, 1936 in Indiana. His father was Harry Albert Holt and his mother was Alice Rosetta Frew Holt. He was their only child and was greatly loved by his family.

He attended Keith Laboratory School from kindergarten, 1941, through 9th grade. He was a high scores man for the Keith Hall basketball team. Keith Hall held many memories for him as he did his Student Teaching in Keith Hall, taught Economics in the Keith Hall classrooms and had his office there as a faculty member of IUP.

In 9th grade he transferred to Indiana Senior High School from which he graduated in 1954. He attended Indiana State Teachers College and graduated in 1958. He studied ROTC and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army in 1958 and served as a peacetime soldier. He attended Bucknell University and graduated with a Masters degree in Business Administration. He then taught Economics at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania for seven years. He attended the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He came to Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 1968 and was a faculty member in the Economics Department until 1999. He was a teacher at heart and enjoyed teaching immensely. He was an avid reader in every spare moment, especially The Wall Street Journal. He was knowledgeable in many subjects.

He was a member of the Indiana Wesleyan Methodist Church where he attended from 1936 to the present, 2018. At the time of his death, he was the member who had attended that church the longest, as his parents had taken him there as a baby. It was there that he knelt at the altar and gave his heart to the Lord as a teenager. He faithfully attended that church and served in several offices across the years.

In 1992, he joined the Gideon’s International and held several local and state offices. He made a practice of carrying New Testaments with him to offer as a free gift to people he met.

He was a member of The Military Order of World Wars. When he was on active duty he served as a Quartermaster at Fort Meade, Maryland for two years. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in the Army. He passed on his patriotic lifestyle to his family. Every Memorial Day found him and his family at the Memorial Park for the program to honor veterans. He was an excellent role model for his children and grandchildren.

He enjoyed clean, fast cars and found relaxation ‘whorshing’ his Mercedes Benz and “Super Baby” – a 1965 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport. He maintained that cars drive better if they are clean.

He was a faithful, loving husband to his wife, Olive Stonebraker Holt, whom he married June 22, 1968. They were two months away from their Golden Wedding Anniversary, June 22.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Alice (Frew) Holt, his mother-in-law, Marie (Olliver) Stonebraker, and his father-in-law, Harry W. Stonebraker, a brother-in-law, Rev. Paul David Stonebraker and sister-in-law Ruby (Dongell) Stonebraker.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynn Marie Uber (Dr. Glenn) of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, sons Dr. Harry D. Holt of State College, Pennsylvania, Major Stephen Gerald (Kerry) Holt of Monrovia, Maryland, and Lieutenant Samuel Bradley (Kristen) Holt of Rosedale, Maryland. Also, grandchildren Benjamin, Jonathan and Daniel Uber; Ethan, Nathan, and Logan Holt; and John and Valerie Holt. His cousin, Earle Holt, resides in Lafayette, California.

Special thanks is extended to the Visiting Nursing Association workers who gave excellent care and allowed Jerry to have a comfortable, dignified end of his journey to heaven.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home in Indiana. Viewing will be on Friday, April 20 at 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM.
