Obituary for Alex John Clevenger

Alex John Clevenger, 89, of Penn Run, died Thursday, September 13, 2018 at Beacon Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born, October 21, 1928 in Brush Valley Township, he was a son of John R. and Fleda (Yarnald) Clevenger. He was the husband of Ruth (Strong) Clevenger, who he married September 1, 1956.

Alex graduated from the former Brush Valley High School. He served in the Army in the Korean War era. Alex worked at Season All Industries for 35 years and operated the family farm in Penn Run. He loved spending time on the farm and tending to the horses. He enjoyed hunting and liked to read poetry books.

He was a member of Penn Run Church of the Brethren and served as a deacon for many years.

Alex is survived by his wife, Ruth; Children, John C. Clevenger and his wife Vickie, of Penn Run; Shari R. Sleppy and her husband Ray, of Penn Run and Timothy E. Clevenger and his wife Tracey, of Clymer. His brother, Carl Clevenger, of Brush Valley also survives him. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren: Ashley Matthews; Joseph Sleppy; Adam Clevenger; Stephen Sleppy; Tyler Clevenger; Amy Clevenger, and Nicholas Clevenger and three great grandchildren: Owen and Abel Matthews and Jase Clevenger.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark Clevenger; and brothers, Roy, Howard and Frank Clevenger and sisters, Betty James and Pearl McCullough.

Friends will be received on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home in Clymer. Additional visitation will take place on Monday September 17, 2018 at 12:30 at the Penn Run Church of the Brethren. Alex’s funeral will take place Monday, at 1PM at the church. Interment will be in Brush Valley Chapel Cemetery.
