Obituary for Margaret Marie Mattis (Peles)

Margaret Marie Mattis, a lifetime resident of Clymer, passed away peacefully on May 14th, 2019. She was born to John Peles and Kathrine (Plusney) Peles, in Dixonville, PA. Years later, just miles from her hometown, she met the handsome Stanley (Nunty) A. Mattis and married shortly thereafter. The two cherished every day together for the next 60 years.

Margaret was the ultimate homemaker. She took pride in her cooking and her baked goods were the envy of all her neighbors. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, dancing the polka, or gardening outside her home, she took a leadership role in numerous organizations. “Marge” served as vice president and later president of the former St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church Christian Mothers. She was also a Girl Scout chaperone and a band mother for Penns Manor High School.

Her passion for history led her to join the National Federation of Democratic Women, which enabled her to attend the 1966 Campaign Conference in Washington, D.C.

Marge loved to play bingo. She was also a talented bowler and an avid sports fan. Countless afternoons were spent at baseball fields throughout Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Texas, where she made it clear she was her grandsons’ biggest fan.

Margaret was a loving Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, and “Aunt Peggy” to her favorite nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mattis was preceded in death by her parents; husband (2003); and brothers, Adam (Anna Mae), John (Dollie), and Paul Peles.

Surviving siblings include her two sisters, Sophie Blazavich, Irene (Ray) Everett, and one sister-in-law, Irene Mattis.

Honoring the memory of their loving mother are her four children: Carol (Robert) Witt, Judy (Jeff) Davis, Stanley Thomas (Eileen) Mattis, and Renee (Walt) Orlovsky-Cook.

Idolizing their Nana are her grandchildren: Bobby (Laurie), Kari and Douglas Witt, Matthew and Chris Davis, Andrew Mattis, Ryan Orlovsky, Bryan Cook, and Joelle (Justin) Cameron.

Fond memories of Nana will be cherished by her great grandchildren: Nicole (James) Russell, Kianna (Zach) Neal, Shaley and Bobby Witt, Jr., Colby, Dylan, and Reid Sullivan, and Vivian Cameron.

Friends will be received from 4PM – 8PM on Friday, May 17th, 2019, at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home, Inc. of Clymer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1PM on Saturday, May 18th, 2019, at the Church of the Resurrection in Clymer with Fr. George Saletrik officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
