Obituary

Gary R. Learn, 68, of Hood School Road, Indiana, unexpectedly died at his home, Sunday, May 19, 2019. Born, May 1, 1951 in Spangler, he was a son of the late Charles R. Learn and Gladys I. (Shaffer) Learn, with whom he resided with at his current residence his entire life.

His surviving siblings are: Karen Crowder, McConnellsburg; Larry Learn (Sue), Penn Run; Donna Cummings (Jerry), Smithers, British Columbia; Donald Learn, Derry; Judy Christopher (Jeff), Crestview, FL; and Lori Cramer, (James), Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents who were already named.

Gary retired from Specialty Tires of Indiana. He had worked in the tire compounding division for more than 44 years where he also maintained a perfect work attendance record. He never missed a day of work. As a self taught rubber chemist, Gary became a valuable asset to the company, receiving many commendations during his years of service.

Gary was a self taught intellectual who was knowledgeable regarding many subjects. He could read a book, or several books for that matter, and then be able to discuss the content of the books in great detail.

He loved gardening and horticulture. He wrote formulas that helped him grow the biggest vegetables, which he in turn shared with his family, friends and neighbors.

Gary enjoyed hunting, flying model airplanes, photography, oil painting and reading. He especially loved his nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. He was of the Baptist Faith.

He was always willing to help someone. Gary was a blessing to all who knew him and will be greatly missed by family, neighbors and friends.

At his request there will be no viewing. His family is planning a Celebration of Life Gathering, Saturday, June 8th from 2 until 6 PM at the Clymer American Legion.

The Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Clymer assisted with the cremation arrangements.

I just heard of Gary's passing, and am saddened.
My Dad (Wayne Murdick) and Gary worked together at McCreary's / Specialty Tires of America & were good friends for many years.
I met Gary when I started working in the Lab at the factory. I learned a lot about a lot of things from him, and had a lot of fun. Gary schemed up little pranks on me : like hiding a big rubber spider that dropped when I opened the rheometer.... I should've known he was up to something when he & the other guys stood around waiting until I changed samples, hee hee.
Lori - Gary and I talked about the days that you & were in 4-H
I live in Florida and will not be able to attend Gary's memorial service.... my thoughts and condolences to all of you.

I was saddened to hear of Gary’s passing. I was very fortunate to have Gary as a RC flight instructor. He was both an interesting individual and generous to a fault as well as exceptionally talented! I count myself fortunate to have known him. He’ll be greatly missed. Unfortunately I will be out of the area and unable to attend his Memorial service. My sincerest sympathies to Larry and the rest of his family.

We were very saddened to hear of Gary's passing. I first met Gary at my first job at McCreary 's. He trained me and I developed a great respect for him and his dedication to anything he pursued. My wife and I became good friends with most o\members of his family over time. We deeply regret that we will not be able to attend his celebration of life; he enjoyed a very fruitful and fulfilling life. We will miss him.

I always enjoyed a visit to Gary's home and chat with him about the garden and life and work. He always wanted me to bring my dog along. I always considered Gary One of the few friends I have had in my life. Gary was one of the nicest people I have ever met in my life and I will miss him.
