Obituary for Joseph Stanley Benko

Joseph Stanley Benko, 93, of Starford, died Friday, October 11, 2019, at the Arista Care Nursing Home in Hillsdale. Born April 24, 1926 in Starford, he was the son of the late Joseph F. Benko and Helen (Potoncey) Benko. Joe was widowed from his wife of nearly 68 years, Jennie M. (Abate) Benko, who died August 11, 2016.

At a young age, Joe entered the coal mines and worked with his father. However after a few years he began working as a plumber for Dicky & Pugh Plumbing and Heating, then later he worked for Shanks Plumbing and Heating which eventually led Joe to start his own business, Joe’s Plumbing and Heating.

Joe was very talented in many different ways. He excelled at woodworking and was able to assist his family and friends with masonry and general construction. For many years he was the caretaker at St. Elizabeth’s Cemetery in Starford and was a church usher at the former St. Elizabeth Church and at the present Church of the Resurrection in Clymer.

In recent years Joe loved to run errands for his family. He did just about anything and everything to help his daughters and his grandchildren. Nearly every day Joe would drive by to check up on his friends at Tate’s Supermarket and other area stores, as well as his own personal friends at their private homes.

Joe is survived by his children: Barbara Rice and husband Tim, Commodore and Kathy Ellis, Clymer. His grandchildren are: Tim Rice (Sherry), Tom Rice, Tammy Stiles (Jerry), Nancy Mikos and Christine Knapik (Kevin). His great-grandchildren are Joey and Jenna Rice, Johnnie and Brandon Mikos, and Hunter and Carter Knapik. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, Joe was preceded in death by his sisters: Mary Yaworsky, Helen Pavlosky and Elizabeth “Lizzy” Benko.

Friends will be received Sunday, October 13th from 4-8PM at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home, of Clymer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday morning, October 14th at 11:30 AM at the Church of the Resurrection, Clymer, Rev. James Morley, Celebrant. Interment will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Starford.
