Obituary for James Burton McGowan

James Burton McGowan, 69, of Portersville, died Sunday, December 27, 2020 at UPMC Jameson Hospital, New Castle. Born in New Castle on March 10, 1951, he was the son of the late Burton W. McGowan and Mary C. (Harlan) McGowan. He was married to Cindy (Kline) McGowan, whom he married April 17, 1971, they spent over 50 years together.

Jim was educated at Laurel Junior-Senior High School. However, his education went beyond the books. He was a self-taught butcher and farmer. He worked as a butcher at Castle Brand for many years. He retired from Quality Rolls as a machinist in 2016. In his spare time, you could find him on his farm fixing his truck or jimmy-rigging farm equipment together. He liked watching old television shows with his wife and dog. He also enjoyed hunting with his sons and helping his friends and families with any project they were working on. Jim also had a great sense of humor and was able to make anyone laugh, even if it was by accident.

In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his two sons: Jason McGowan (Tracy); and Joshua McGowan (partner James Kindler). He will also be remembered by his grandchildren: Austin McGowan and Loganne McGowan (fiancé Trevor Knight); and his sister, Jean McWilliams (Russell), of Seneca; he will also be missed by his Springer Spaniel and best buddy, Ranger.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and his step-mom, Martha (Harlan) Fullwood-McGowan.

Friends and family will be received Wednesday, December 30, 2020 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Mt. Hermon Presbyterian Church, 3116 Frew Mill Road, New Castle, PA 16101. His funeral service will immediately follow, officiated by Pastor Marsha Parrish. Burial will take place in the church cemetery. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, face masks and social distancing will be required. The McGowan family is being assisted by the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana.
