childhood memories

I have so many memories of my Aunt June...one of my fondest recollections as a child is of her, Aunt Gertrude and my mother out in the kitchen at Aunt Gert's place preparing meals for large family gatherings.  Those three sisters had so much fun together in that kitchen....they laughed, giggled and carried on like teenagers!  It seemed to me that the meals took a long time to prepare and must have been a lot of work but the three of them never seemed to mind...they felt so much joy in one another's presence.  Just the thought them together in that kitchen makes me smile.

Although my parents, brothers and I lived in Michigan, we visited our family in Pennsylvania often.  I remember staying at Aunt June's home in Kenwood...she always made us feel so welcome...going to her place was like going home.  I remember her funny, witty stories (even in her senior years her mind and memory remained sharp)...I remember us gathering around her at the piano while she accompanied our singing...I remember her wonderful homemade bread, right out of the oven and still warm...I remember her beautiful perennial flower garden.  She was always such a hard worker...more than that, she was an intelligent, kind, gentle and wonderful person.  As both a child and later as an adult, I've always felt blessed to have her as part of my life...she was a real gift and she will always live on in my memories.  Rest in peace Aunt June, till we meet again.
