German Improvisation

One of my favorite moments with Dr. Dietz was at an IUP music department function called "Departmentals" where students were selected to perform their better prepared works. John knew I was primarily a jazz musician, and he tolerated my somewhat odd stylings of his assigned works. So it was during one of these departmental performances I was to perform a beautiful German Lieder. It was a Schumann work I believe, anyway, the first verse came off splendidly. However as the intro to the second verse began I had a brain dead moment, forgetting what the words were, so in my jazz mind I sang in what you might call ' German Scat' or more accurately German gibberish. Anyway, no one even noticed, except of course for my teacher! Backstage as he left he just said " Mr. Menk, I loved your interpretation of the second verse!" My accompanist and I just chuckled under our breath.
