Obituary for Joseph R. Kubin

Joseph Robert Kubin, 74, of Indiana, died Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at the Indiana Regional Medical Center. Born in Charleroi, March 23, 1943, he was a son of the late, Andrew Kubin and Mary (Mislan) Kubin. He married the former Betty Jane (Lustik) Kubin, September 8, 1965. Next month they would have celebrated 52 years of marriage.

A graduate of Charleroi High School, Joe then attended classes at Penn State Uniontown and IUP where he studied mine engineering. He went to work for the Bethlehem Mines Corporation prior to working for the Pennsylvania Mines Corporation, headquartered in Ebensburg where he was Vice President of Mine Safety. Throughout his career, Joe assisted with many mine rescue operations in various parts of the eastern mining region. Before he retired, he was employed by Gibson Thomas Engineering, Latrobe.


Joe was an Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force where he served in Turkey during the Vietnam War.

In addition to hunting and fishing, Joe loved to play golf and could often be found playing a round at the Meadow Lane Golf Course in Indiana. He was a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge # 313 of Indiana.

His church membership was at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church.

He is remembered by his wife, Betty and the following two children: Lisa Geosits and her late husband, John, and their son, Christopher, Coplay, PA; and Joseph Michael Kubin and his companion, Sasha Cantley and her two sons, Caleb and Garrett Cantley, Daniels, WV. Other survivors include his brother-in-law, Richard Lustik & wife, Chris, Eighty Four, PA and several nieces and nephews.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Andy Kubin and son-in-law, John Geosits.

Friends will be received Thursday, August 24th from 3 until 8 PM at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home of Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday morning at 10 AM at St. Bernard of Clairvaux Church, Indiana. Entombment will be at the St. Bernard Cemetery’s Mausoleum.
